Barbara Ann Munsterman (née Malmquist)

Barbara "Barb" Ann Munsterman passed away on Monday, December 8, 2025, in Ashton, ID, at the age of 84, after a brief illness.

Barb was born on August 30, 1941, in St. Paul, MN, and was adopted at three days old by Anna and Adolph Malmquist. She graduated from Washington High School in St. Paul in 1959.

On November 21, 1964, Barb married Donald G. Munsterman in St. Paul. They made their home in Blaine, MN, where they welcomed their children, James and Jenny. The family remained in Blaine until Donald's retirement, after which they moved to Buffalo Center, IA. Barb lived there until Donald's passing in May 2007. She later moved to Cheyenne, WY, and eventually settled in Ashton, ID.

Barb worked for many years at Empire and American Engraving Companies in Minneapolis. She was an avid reader and lovingly passed on her passion for books to her daughter and granddaughters.

Barb was preceded in death by her parents, Anna and Adolph Malmquist; her husband, Donald; five brothers‑in‑law; four sisters‑in‑law; two nieces; and two nephews.

She is survived by her son James (Gina) Munsterman of Ashton, ID, and her daughter Jenny (Marc) McElyea of Shoreview, MN. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Kyle (Sumaira) Magnan of Cottage Grove, MN; James (Samantha) Munsterman Jr. of Derry, NH; Elizabeth (fiancé James Aho) McElyea of St. Paul, MN; and Isabelle McElyea of Shoreview, MN. Barb leaves behind five great‑grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and siblings‑in‑law Lorraine Munsterman, Lyle Munsterman, and Jerry (Vonnie) Munsterman.

Barb will be interred with her husband, Donald, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN, at a later date.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and medical personnel at the Ashton Care Center for the compassionate care they provided during Barb's time there. A special thank‑you goes to Sheila and Mary for their tender care in her final days.
