Carol Stevens Henrie passed away surrounded by family in her Driggs, Idaho home on May 5, 2015 after over 91 years as a Teton Valley girl. Carol was born in Victor, Idaho on February 4, 1924, daughter of S. Arden and Edith Gillette Stevens, and lived in Teton Valley most of her life.
Carol grew up with and enjoyed her sisterCarmenand brother Don. Carol graduated from Teton High School. As a young girl during the Great Depression she learned to work hard, live thriftily, and make the most of what she had. She was born feisty and maintained her attitude, a big personality in a tiny frame.
Carol took a while to find the right man, but met her life mate in Gary L. Henrie, with whom she enjoyed nearly 54 years of marriage. Carol had three children from a former marriage; she and husband Gary raised Michael, Sandy and Chris and also enjoyed 14 grandchildren, and, at last count, 30 great grandchildren.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved daughter Sandy and Sandy's husband Randy Berry, her brother Don Stevens, and a grandson, Jeff Berry.
Carol is survived by husband Gary, sister Carmen Rochelle, son Michael Whitfield (Liz Davy), daughter Chris (Craig Kunz), and her grand- and great grandchildren.
Mom was a singer with near-perfect pitch and loved to dance. For many years she sang with local women in the Choraliers, and performed in many concerts in Idaho and Utah. Her Happy Birthday songs over the telephone were treasured. She loved family games and telling stories to grandchildren, and was a passionate pro-football and LA Dodgers fan. She was an excellent cook, and deployed her green thumb in her much enjoyed flower gardens.
After high school, Carol worked at Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, UT. As a young woman Carol worked at Hillman's Economy Cash Store among other jobs. She later enjoyed a long career at the federal Agriculture Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) where she worked with many local farmers and colleagues.
Mom was a list maker and an organizer, someone who took charge and got things done. She actively participated in the American Legion Auxillary, and particularly enjoyed selection of Girls State Candidates each year.
A life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Carol participated in Relief Society and provided many hours of service to local families. Most of all Carol was Mom, Grandma, and Great-Grandma, and loved all her offspring liberally and generously.
Thanks to Teton Valley Hospital staff, particularly doctor and friend Dr. Chad Horrocks, Hospice provider Sue Beard, and friends Kim Anderson and Rhonda Hammer and others who cared for mom.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate her life at a family visitation at the LDS Stake Center in Driggs on Friday, May 8 from 6:00 t0 7:30 P.M. Her funeral will begin at 11:00 A.M. at the Stake Center on Saturday, May 9 with further family visitation from 10:00 to 10:45 A.M.
