Obituary

Nancy Davida Hanks Green was born July 5, 1916, in Tetonia to David Capener and Emma Wright Hulet Hanks. Her mother lost her first husband, leaving her with a five month old baby. Her father had five children from a previous marriage. Davida was the oldest child born to David and Emma and was 15 when her father died. She never considered their family as steps and halves, but just brothers and sisters who were always close. The Hanks family, like many during the depression, had limited material possessions. Davida spent time scrubbing clothes on a washboard in a tin tub and managing the washer with a hand wringer. She attended elementary school in Tetonia, high school in Driggs and Rexburg, graduating as salutatorian. She then attended Henagar Business College in Salt Lake City.

Oscar and Davida met during high school when the student body president with a nice head of dark hair caught her eye. On June 4, 1936, she married Oscar Clement Green in the Salt Lake Temple. Much of their early marriage they lived in Teton Canyon near a lumber mill run by Oscar and his brothers. They lived in a log cabin heated by a fireplace. Water was hauled from the creek and heated in a reservoir of a wood-burning stove.

Davida's life was consumed by taking care of her 11 children. She spent many hours sitting on bleachers at football games, basketball games and drill team competitions. She sewed countless drill team, cheerleading, and dance costumes; prom and bridesmaids dresses. Every Easter and Christmas she made her daughters new dresses. She enjoyed serving in the LDS church and meeting with the Sew Chat Club. Making ends meet and providing for the needs of her family required great of skill.

Davida began playing the piano when she was eight years old and teaching piano lessons to her grandchildren and Teton Valley youth 30 years ago. When she turned 92 she decided it was time to quit.

She was extremely well read, often exceeding the 25 book limit at the library. When there was no library, she would order a crate of books from the state library according to her children's interests.

Davida lived her life with quiet dignity and grace. When faced with challenges and hardships, she met them with determination and strength. As a young married couple they lost their firstborn son and not long after lost nearly everything in a house fire. Later in life, Oscar's open heart surgery and massive stroke left Davida with the responsibility of caring for him for nine years. She met this challenge with prayer and dignity. After his death she faced her own health challenges with the same strength and nobility.

Davida died May 21, 2016, at her home in Driggs, Idaho, a few weeks short of her 100th birthday. She was preceded in death by her husband, son Michael, grandson Brian, and seven siblings. She is survived by her children Thayne (Verlene) Green, Greg (Dianne) Green, Margie (Blair) Holmes, Brooks (Kathleen) Green, Marcia (Mike) Kunz, Kayleen (Roy) Moulton, Rosalie (Brad) Kunz, Eric (Linda) Green, Betsy (Zane) Calderwood, Diane (Hiram) Burnett, 48 grandchildren, 128 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren and 5 siblings.
