Helen Mabel Osborne High, 89, of Ashton, died August 20, 2015, at her home of natural causes. She was born March 13, 1926, at Vernon Idaho southwest of Ashton near Black Springs.
She was delivered by her grandmother Millie Ricks Olsen who later raised her from the age of 5 years old after the death of her mother. She was the first of four girls from George Almon Osborne and Mabel Ricks Olsen. She attended the Ashton schools and graduated in with the class of 1944. Many of those school years she rode a horse to school. She grew up in the depression years and learned not to waste anything. Helen washed dishes for the piano teacher in exchange piano lessons. After graduation from high school she worked painting houses to help make ends meet.
October 1944 she married Robert Grant High. They lived with Robert's Family West of Ashton on Snow Creek, in Bird Rock Canyon. Shortly after being married her husband was asked to serve in the Navy and left for the duration of the war returning in April of 1946. Her daughter Mary Dawn was born in the summer of 1945 while Robert was on the transport ship just north of Hawaii heading for the Philippines. In 1949 her son Jim was born followed in 1953 by her son Bill. She moved out of the canyon in 1954 about 1 mile south to her present location where she lived the remainder of her life. In 1972 the old house where she lived burned to the ground and she lost everything. She worked with her husband and raised her family while working on the farm. She also helped with the pipe line welding business which help to support the farming hobby.
Helen enjoyed, and was very good at crocheting, making braided rag rugs, quilting, knitting, and sewing. She sewed most of her kids clothing. She was a good cook and never let her family leave the house without a good breakfast. She grew a big garden and canned the fruits and vegetables for the winter. She was especially proud of her raspberry patch. She loved flowers and often would take some to her grandmother. She always said that her grandmother would enjoy them more while she was alive than at her funeral. During her later years she enjoyed feeding the humming birds. She counted over 80 humming birds one summer after the Yellowstone fire.
She considered it a priority that all her family get a good education and learn to work hard. She taught by example and worked side by side with her family all day and when the work was done she cooked dinner.
She waited most her life to attend the Temple where at the age of 86 years young she realized her goal.
She is survived by her children Mary (Norman) Wengert of Kimberly, Idaho, Jim (Dena) High of Rock Springs, WY, Bill (Brenda) High of Pasco, Washington; 11 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
