Obituary

Herbert Gust Steinmann arrived on earth June 11, 1931, in Ashton Idaho. He left this earth on November 12, 2021, at the Ashton Living Center, Ashton, Idaho. Herb was the son of Gustav Carl Steinmann and Martha Marie Corcilius Steinmann.

Herb attended Ashton Elementary and then Ashton High School. While in High School he played football and was on the boxing team. While on the boxing team he only lost one match during the four years of High School. He lettered in both sports.

Herb enjoyed fishing and bird hunting with his father when he was a boy and young man.

Herb attended college at the University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho for one year. When he came back from college he joined the Army National Guard in Ashton. The guard was called up to serve in the Korean conflict. He was in Korea from 1951 to 1952. He was Honorably Discharged on the 8th of March 1952 as a Master Sergeant.

After Herb came home that March he met a girl at an Armory dance in Ashton. That girl was Donna Reynolds. Herb and Donna's romance blossomed and they were married on June 24, 1953. Two children were born to their union. Linda in 1954 and Michael Gust in 1957.

Herb's father Gust owned a farm in Ashton and farming was instilled in Herb at an early age. He ended up farming for 40 years. In his lifetime he saw major changes in agriculture. Going from horse drawn equipment in his youth to GPS driven tractors in his later years.

Herb joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1963. He was active in that church for the remainder of his life.

In 2010, Herb and his friend Bud Swanstrum had the honor of being chosen to be the Grand Marshals for the 4th of July parade in Ashton.

Herb suffered a stroke in 2018, he was recovering from this stroke when he fell at a family party and broke his hip. Donna had been taking good care of him prior to the fall but he had to be admitted to the Ashton Living Center after the fall. He had to remain there until his death.

Herb and Donna were married for 68 years. He was born in and lived in Ashton his entire 90 years.

Herb is survived by his wife Donna of Ashton, his sister Mabel Marotz of Idaho Falls, his daughter Linda (Brad) Telford of Eagle Point, Oregon, their children Taylor Telford, Trevor (Melissa) Telford, Lindsay (Steve) Anderson, and Drew Telford. His son Michael (Kim) Steinmann of Ashton, Courtney (Steinmann) Parkinson, Gabriele (Bo) Nedrow, Daniele (Trent) Stevens, Rob (McKenzie) Steinmann, and Mikiele (Coley) Luce. Herb had 10 Grandchildren and 23 Great Grandchildren.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents Gus and Martha, his brother Carl, his sister Eleanore and brother in law George Glarborg, his brother in law Victor Marotz, his sisters Caroline Valentine and Martha Van Zee, two grandsons Nicholas and Christopher Steinmann.

A special thank you to Ashton Living Center employees for the wonderful care, attention and love Herb was given there.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 20, at the Ashton 4th Ward chapel, 1313 North 3600 East. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Baxter Funeral Home and Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Pineview Cemetery.
