Verl Jay Lords, 93, of Ashton, formerly of Ammon, died June 1, 2016, at the Ashton Living Center of natural causes. He was born September 5, 1922, in Idaho Falls, Idaho to Alvah and Bertha Christiansen Lords. He was raised and attended schools in Ashton, Idaho. He continued his education at Industrial Institute in Weiser, Idaho.
On December 31, 1942, he married Mary Nelda Hendricks. They were later sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on January 26, 1955.
Jay and Nelda had seven children, Vicki, Verl, Betty, J'lene, Connie, Kristi and Rick. They raised their family in Ashton. Jay farmed with his father and brother from 1946 - 1958. He owned and operated Jay's 66 gasoline business for 30 years.
Jay was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings, but especially enjoyed serving with his wife as an officiator in the Idaho Falls temple. He also served on the Ashton City Council and was a member of the Lions Club and Chamber of Commerce.
Jay served in the US Navy during World War II as a 1st Class Seaman. He was stationed in the Philippines.
He is survived by a sister-in-law, Naida Lords of Ashton; children, Verl (Nisi) Lords of Sugar City, Betty Lords of Ammon, Connie (Kevin) Pace of West Jordan, Utah, Kristi (Adam) Kent of Herriman, Utah, Rick (Tami) Lords of Ammon; 23 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Nelda Hendricks Lords; his parents Alvah and Bertha Lords; a brother Wayne Lords; two sisters, Rula Lords Bingham Lawson Gilbert and Bernadine Quinton; and two daughters Vicki Johnson and J'lene Pharis.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 6, at the Ashton Tri-Ward Building, 1313 North 3600 East. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at Baxter Funeral Home, 717 Main Street, in Ashton and Monday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Pineview Cemetery where military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 89 and the Idaho Honor Guard.
