John Elmer Hathaway, 84, of Ashton, died December 23, 2021, with his wife at his side.

He was born May 31, 1937, in Nevada City, California to Walter and Marion Ladd Hathaway. He was raised in California and Chester, Idaho.

After finishing school he joined the US Navy and served honorably for a number of years, including in the Vietnam War.

He married Patricia "Pat" Hitchcock on October 30, 1964, in Island Park, Idaho. They made their home in Ashton.

John worked as a logger for several local logging companies. He had a camp trailer and would travel to wherever the work was. He also worked as a cowboy for area ranches. He was a locksmith. He was a hard worker and was appreciated by his bosses for his work ethic.

He liked to hunt and trap. He enjoyed dogs and always had a dog with him until last year when his last dog died.

He is survived by his wife, Pat of Ashton; daughter, Marie Hathaway of Salem, Oregon; and three sisters, Nancy, Anne, and Lori. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Gary.
