Katherine (Katie) Mearl Murdoch Lyon, aged 91 years, 11 1/2 months, of Ashton, Idaho, passed away early in the morning of July 16, 2018, at the Homestead assisted living center in Rexburg.
Katie was born on August 5, 1926, in Farnum, Idaho, the youngest of 10 children born to Brigham and Luann Hammon Murdoch, both descendants of Mormon pioneers. She attended the two-room schoolhouse at Farnum and moved to Ashton with her parents when she was nine. She graduated from Ashton High School in 1944 and married Glade Lyon in 1946 after he returned from military service in World War II. They and their four children were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple in 1962. Ashton has always been their home.
An active member of the LDS Church, Katie served in many presidencies and callings. She also served in many offices and capacities in the Women's Auxiliary to American Legion Post 89. She often worked at the Flea Market to raise money for charity. She loved going to the Ashton Senior Citizens' Center and enjoyed many happy hours sharing meals, visiting, and quilting there with her friends.
She and Glade owned Lyon's Store, which operated for more than 40 years on Main Street in Ashton. She helped select merchandise for the store and was in charge of Toyland in the store's basement every Christmas.
Katie was a skillful seamstress and made more than 100 hand-pieced, hand-sewn quilts that she gave to family and friends and donated for community fund-raisers. She was also well known for her homemade bread, delicious chocolate-chip cookies, and beautiful flower gardens.
Katie left a legacy of service. She devoted her life to being a caring wife, mother, and grandmother.
She is survived by her children, Jack M. (Anne) Lyon of West Jordan, Utah; Suzanne (Larry) Hamilton, Robin (Rodolfo) Rivas, and Kathy (Steve) Anderson, all of Ashton; 19 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Wallace (Pauline) Murdoch of Carlisle, Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glade Lyon; her parents; and eight of her brothers and sisters and their spouses.
