Opal Alice Kirkpatrick Smith, 96, of Driggs, came into this world on May 11, 1921, and left this world on July 10, 2017, surrounded by her family.
Opal was born in Carl, Iowa to Charles and Mable Kirkpatrick. She had three brothers and a sister. All of her siblings preceded her in death.
Opal moved to Teton Valley when she was a teenager. This is where she met and married Lee O. Smith. Together they raised eight children and one granddaughter on the family farm in Darby.
Opal started work outside of the home in 1961. She worked at Session's Grocery Store, The Corner Drug Store (making those great lime freezes), the Best Western and Super 8 Motels. She met and made many good friends during this time.
Opal loved her dogs, cooking, sewing, quilting, her flowers, garden, and orchard. She made many quilts and the lucky recipients were her children and grandchildren. She also loved football, the Denver Broncos specifically.
Opal was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many capacities.
She is survived by her children, Mae (Dick) Phillips, Carole (Larry, deceased) Quinn, Julia (Norman) Helderman, Jane (Ken) Smaellie, Sandra (Craig) Stewart, Gary (Jenny) Smith, and her granddaughter she raised, Michelle Smith. She is also survived by 22 other grandchildren and many great and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lee, two sons Sidney and Elwin; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Her family will miss her greatly.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 15, at the Driggs LDS Stake Center with Bishop Michael Brown of the Driggs 2nd Ward officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the stake center prior to services. Burial will be in the Driggs Cemetery.
The family would like to thank the staff at Teton Valley Hospital and Teton Peaks Assisted Living for their care and kindness.
